Making pots on a wheel is not easy, but it’s a lot of fun. It's a great leisure activity to do with your family or on your own. This package is generally best suited to those with some previous pottery wheel experience. However, it’s not all about the results. Having a go and making even the wobbliest of pots could create some great memories and fill you with pride!
Instructions on how to use the machine and some step by step tips on how to make simple pots on the wheel are included to get you started.
Clay is a natural, safe and sustainable material. Damp clay scraps can be saved in a sealed plastic bag to re-use again and again so there is next to no waste. You should find that the 12lb. bag of clay included will easily be enough to make plenty of messy mistakes and, after a bit of practice, a few items that you might even want to keep.
The rental package includes all the equipment you need to get started throwing pots:
1 x Electric Speedball Potter's Wheel & Stool
1 x 6lb. bag of earthenware clay that fires to an off white color.
1 x User guide with safety instructions and tips!
Tools included: 1 x sponge, 1 x wooden knife, 1 x wooden rib, 1 x needle tool, 1 x cutting wire, 1 x trimming tool
Delivery and collection to and from your home address fee $40. Collection of package is available; due to the size and weight of the potters wheel a car/van with ample space is required.
Firing and glazing of 3 made pots is included in the package. Extra Pots made there is a firing fee of $6 per pot. Additional glaze can also be purchased.
All tools and equipment are returnable at the end. The clay is to keep …. for your next time! 😊

How does it work?
If you’re interested in our Potters Wheel Home Rental Package, please select your date and get started! We will send a hire contract for you to read and sign. We are unable to reserve dates without a payment having been made.
What about the pots I make?
Clear Glazing and firing of 6 - 1LB or pots made from clay included in the Potters Wheel Home Rental Package included in cost.
If you would like any additional thrown pots to be fired we can do this at a charge of $5 - $10 per pot depending on size.
If the pots are ready for firing when we collect or at the time you return the potters wheel we can take them then.
If you would prefer more time to let them dry, or to work on them - that’s fine. Just call us when they’re ready. Pots are best transported before they are fully bone dry as they become very brittle and more fragile. Please pack and transport carefully.
The pots will be fired once in the kiln, they will be coated in a layer of lead free clear glaze and fired to around 1828*F. The pottery will have a clear glossy finish and ready for use.
Can I have colour on my pots?
The Potters Wheel Home Rental Package includes the use of our standard studio clear glaze. If you wish to add colour to your pots, you can purchase glaze from us. These can be applied to clay pots before being returned to us. The clear glaze is then applied over the top to give a bright glossy finish.
What if I need to cancel my booking?
Wheel at home bookings can be cancelled at anytime before 6pm 3 days before on the agreed day of delivery of the equipment. The hire payment and security deposit (if paid) will be refunded minus the $20 administration fees. If cancelled after stated time a $50 cancellation fee will be deducted from your refund.
Is this package suitable for a total beginner?
If you are a total beginner and are approaching this as a bit of fun, we have included step by step instructions and tips to get you started. Producing good quality pots on a potter's wheel is not easy and takes a lot of practice. Some people pick it up more quickly than others. Clearly, those who've had some previous experience and have been shown the basics are likely to get better results (but you never know!) included in your package will be a list of helpful resources/videos.
Always read the safety sheet before use.
Is there a discount for schools including home-school?
We offer discounts for school/ homeschools please contact us for more information.
Is your equipment tested for safety?
Yes, all our equipment is formally inspected before each hire. However, anyone hiring the equipment must use it only in acordance with the instructions and information provided n to ensure it remains safe throughout the hire period.
Is the hire equipment insured?
No, it is the responsibility of the hirer to take out insurance if they so wish. We will happily provide a full valuation on request. You do not have to insure the equipment but you are responsible for the full replacement value until it is returned to us. ($730)
Which areas do you cover?
Delivery and Collection covers all parishes. Note; delivery of fired items will incur an additional charge.
Can we collect the equipment from you?
Yes you can. You will need a car or van with ample space for the potters wheel.
Can I hire for longer than the normal hire period?
This hire package is designed for either weekend or midweek hire only. However, if you would like to discuss hiring from us for a longer period depending on availability please get in touch for a discounted price.
When can I get my finished pots?
Finished pots are typically ready within 3 - 4 weeks. This allows time for the clay to fully dry before firings, and to fit in with our firing schedule. Note: We do 1 Clay kiln firing a month!
Finished pots cannot be stored indefinitely so please pick up your finished pots as soon as you are able to once notified they are ready for collection.
What if I run out of Clay?
This Package is designed primarily as a leisure activity for novice potters to experience the fun of wheel throwing and not for the production of vast amounts of finished pots. One 6lb bag of clay is included in the Potters Wheel Home Rental Package. As a rough guide for competent wheel throwers, this amount of clay should be sufficient to produce approximately 6 small bowls.
Please bear in mind, there is little waste with this activity as clay ‘flops’ can be recycled by kneading to use again. However, if you feel that you need more clay, this can be purchased from us in 6Lb - $36 or 12Lb- $60 bags. Any clay left over at the end of the hire period belongs to you to keep.
Can I use my own clay?
You are welcome to use your own clay to practice throwing on our equipment at home. However, we will only fire pots produced from clay we supply. (This is so we can be confident that our firing temperature and glaze used is safe and appropriate)
Will you fire my other clay creations?
Sorry, no! For practical reasons, we are currently only firing wheel thrown work produced as part of the Potters Wheel Home Rental Package, purchased clay from us and Clay to Go Kits.
Note; Clay purchased from us or additional items made in the packages incur additional charge per item. This depends on the size of the item: Mug, small bowls or vases = $7. Larger items range from $10 -up.
Can I just hire the Wheel without tools, clay and firing?
This package is aimed at novice potters with no existing equipment or supplies, so the package includes everything required.
Note; Unless you have a kiln to fire your own clay we do not rent the potters wheel and fire clay not purchased from us.
